An avid reader, with a particular fondness for biographies of

the stars of Hollywood’s golden era. He enjoyed horse & dog

racing, good food & drink. He was a self-made man with a

dynamic personality -- his father died when he was a child

and he left school at 13. He had a wealth of sayings/expressions

that live on, carry his memory: “Let it be soon”; “Put that in

your sky”; “Mark my card”; “Last him a lifetime’; ‘Set out your

stall”; “First is first, second is nowhere”; “Let’s keep the party

clean” ... “It’s not a bad life”. )
